When she saw news footage of doctors treating record numbers of patients and even more people waiting to be seen, Compestine could easily envision that environment. The story of her latest novel, Morning Sun in Wuhan, spoke to Compestine not just because Covid first made international news in Wuhan, but also because she is the daughter of two doctors and she grew up in a hospital compound in Wuhan. That is, not until the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in early 2020.
